Electric Swing Gate Arm Jerky and Shaking When Closing
Smooth travel is what a swing operator is supposed to deliver: a controlled start, a steady middle, and a slow-down into the stop. Juddering means either the mechanical load is changing through the arc, or the operator can no longer control the motion.
It's worth taking seriously early. Shaking puts shock loads through hinges, posts, and the operator's own mounting, so a small problem gets expensive if you leave it running.
Most likely causes
1.Binding or worn hinges
Dry, rusted, or worn hinges make resistance uneven through the arc — the classic cause of judder at the same point every cycle.
2.Sagging gate leaf
A leaf out of square catches or rides differently as it swings, especially near the close.
3.Loose operator mounting
Post bracket or gate bracket bolts backed off. The whole operator moves instead of the gate.
4.Post movement
North Texas clay swells and shrinks. A post that has tilted changes the geometry the operator was set up for.
5.Slow-down or force settings wrong
Aggressive deceleration or force limits fighting the gate produce stutter near the ends of travel.
6.Weak power supply
A failing battery or undersized supply causes surge-and-sag motion under load.
7.Worn operator internals
Gearbox or ram wear at the end of its service life.
Step-by-step checks

Note where in the arc it judders
Same point each time means mechanical. Throughout travel means power or the operator.

Release and swing by hand
Slowly, with your hand on the leaf. You'll feel the tight spot directly.

Inspect and lubricate hinges
Check for wear in the pin and knuckle, rust, and any sign the hinge has elongated. Lubricate with an outdoor-rated product.

Check the gate for square
Look at the gap along the closing edge, top to bottom. A tapering gap means the leaf has dropped.

Check every mounting bolt
Both operator brackets, and the post itself for movement in the concrete.

Check power under load
Battery voltage during motor start, and supply voltage at the operator.

Adjust speed and slow-down settings last
Only once the mechanical side is clean, and per the manual for your operator.

- Is juddering damaging the gate?
- Yes, over time. Shock loads work hinges, welds, and mounting bolts loose, and hammer the operator's internals. Fixing it early is cheaper.
- Can I fix a sagging gate with an anti-sag cable?
- A tension kit can pull a light wood gate back to square. On a heavy steel gate, or when the post has moved, the post and frame need proper repair instead.
- Do you reset gate posts?
- Yes — steel posts set in concrete footings is how we build every gate, and resetting a moved post is common repair work for us.
