Sliding Gate Opener Motor Running but Gate Not Moving
If you can hear the motor turning and the gate is standing still, power and control are fine. Something between the motor and the gate has come apart or is slipping. On a slide gate that's a short list: the manual release, the drive chain or rack-and-pinion, or the gearbox.
Diagnosis is mostly a matter of looking while someone else sends a command — from a safe distance, with hands clear of the drivetrain.
Most likely causes
1.Manual release still disengaged
Someone released the gate during a power cut and never re-engaged it. First thing to check, every time.
2.Chain off the sprocket or broken
The motor spins the sprocket into nothing. You'll usually spot the loose chain immediately.
3.Rack teeth stripped or rack loose
On rack-and-pinion slide gates, worn plastic rack or loose mounting bolts let the pinion spin without driving.
4.Stripped gearbox or shear pin
Internal gear damage from years of a binding gate, or a sacrificial pin that has done its job.
5.Gate jammed in the track
The motor labours against a gate that cannot move. Sounds different — loaded, not free-spinning.
6.Drive wheel slipping
On friction-drive operators, a worn or wet drive wheel spins on the gate frame.

Check the manual release first
Find the release lever or key and confirm the operator is engaged. Re-engage per the manual, which sometimes requires moving the gate slightly to line up.

Look at the drivetrain while it runs
Stand clear, have someone send a command, and watch. Chain slack, a spinning pinion, a slipping wheel — you'll see it in one cycle.

Listen to how the motor sounds
Free-spinning and easy means it's driving nothing. Straining and loaded means the gate is jammed.

Push the gate by hand
Power off, release the operator, and push. Free-rolling means the drivetrain is the fault. Won't budge means the track or rollers are.

Inspect chain, rack, and sprocket
Broken links, a chain on the floor, rounded rack teeth, hooked sprocket teeth, loose bolts.

Stop running it
Every cycle into a stripped gear or a jammed gate does more damage. Cut power until it's repaired.
