Automatic Driveway Gate Opens but Will Not Close

Opens fine, won't close is the single most diagnosable fault on an automatic gate, because gate operators are deliberately built to fail in the open position. Anything that makes the operator unsure whether the closing path is clear will leave the gate standing open rather than risk closing on someone.

So the question isn't why it won't close — it's which input is telling it not to. Start with the safety devices.

Most likely causes

1.Photo eyes blocked or misaligned

A spider web across the lens, mud, a knocked bracket, sun glare straight into the receiver, or a post that has shifted a few degrees. Number one cause.

2.A safety loop or exit loop stuck on

A detector that thinks a vehicle is still in the opening will hold the gate open indefinitely. Water in the saw cut does it too.

3.Reversing edge or wand triggered

A damaged edge sensor or a bent exit wand reports a constant obstruction.

4.Timer-to-close disabled or set to zero

Some setups only auto-close if timer-to-close is enabled. If it was switched off during a service, the gate waits for a close command that never comes.

5.Hold-open mode left on

Many operators have a hold-open or vacation setting, sometimes triggered by a key switch, an intercom, or a fire-service input.

6.Something genuinely in the way

    Walk the opening and look at the beams

    Both photo eye housings: are the lenses clean, are the indicator LEDs steady, are the units pointing at each other? Wipe the lenses and check for webs.

    Test the beam

    Wave your hand through it and watch for the LED to change. If nothing changes, the pair isn't seeing each other at all.

    Realign a knocked eye

    Loosen the bracket, aim it straight at its partner, and tighten. Small angles matter a lot over a wide driveway.

    Clear the opening entirely

    Move vehicles, bins, and anything sitting in the closing path, then send a close command.

1. Record what the gate actually does

Does it remain completely still, start closing and reopen, or fail only after rain? Note the operator model and any externally visible display message. These details help separate a control-input problem from physical resistance.

Move vehicles away from the entrance and any visible loop cuts in the pavement. A loop’s function cannot reliably be identified by its location alone; it may request opening or help prevent closing.

4. Check normal user controls

Look for an engaged hold-open switch or an authorized access schedule. Consult the manual before changing timer settings. A gate that closes with its normal control but never closes automatically may have a timer or hold-open issue rather than a failed motor.

5. Inspect the travel path from a safe position

Look for stones in a sliding track, a bent guide bracket, loose hardware, or a swing gate dragging on the driveway. Before clearing anything within the travel area, isolate power and follow the manufacturer’s procedure; battery backup may still power the gate.

One symptom can have several causes. For example, a reversing gate does not automatically need more closing force. Increasing force can hide binding and increase injury risk.
