Driveway Gate Loop Detector Keeps Triggering in Rain

A vehicle loop is a coil of wire in a saw cut in the driveway, sealed over, wired back to a detector that watches the coil's inductance. Park a car over it and the inductance changes, the detector calls, the gate reacts. Water shouldn't change inductance — but water in the wrong place changes the insulation resistance of a damaged loop, and that will absolutely produce false calls.

So a loop that misbehaves only when it rains is a strong indicator of compromised loop wire or sealant, not a detector that needs turning down.

Most likely causes

1.Failed sealant in the saw cut

Loop sealant cracks and shrinks over years of Texas heat. Water gets down to the wire.

2.Nicked or aged loop wire insulation

Damage during install, or insulation that has broken down with age. Wet, it leaks to ground; dry, it behaves.

3.Cracked pavement through the loop

Concrete or asphalt movement over clay soil breaks the loop or stretches it. Very common in North Texas.

4.Bad splice at the lead-in

The splice between loop and feeder is the classic failure point. It must be properly sealed and ideally in a junction box, not buried loose.

5.Detector sensitivity too high

Turned up to compensate for a weakening loop — which makes false calls worse.

6.Water in the detector enclosure

Less common, but check the housing.

Step-by-step checks

    Confirm it's the loop

    Watch the detector's call LED during rain. If it's latching on with nothing over the loop, the loop circuit is the fault.

    Walk the saw cut

    Look along the whole loop for cracked or missing sealant, and for a crack in the pavement crossing the cut.

    Find and inspect the lead-in splice

    Usually near the gate post or in a box beside the drive. Look for corrosion, tape instead of a proper seal, or a splice sitting in standing water.

    Have the loop tested electrically

    Loop inductance and insulation resistance to ground are the two measurements that identify a wet or damaged loop. Insulation resistance dropping in the wet is the signature.

    Don't just turn sensitivity down

    It can mask the fault for a while, at the cost of missing real vehicles — the failure mode where a gate closes on a car.

    Reseal or replace

    A dry, sound loop with failed sealant can sometimes be resealed. Damaged wire means cutting a new loop and installing fresh wire.

How long should a vehicle loop last?
A properly installed and sealed loop lasts for many years. What ends it early is pavement movement, poor sealing, or a splice that wasn't waterproofed.
