Automatic Gate Won't Open in Freezing Weather
North Texas gets a handful of hard freezes a year, and gate service calls spike on exactly those mornings. Cold doesn't usually break a healthy gate — it exposes one that was already marginal, because three things get worse at once: the battery delivers less, the gate takes more to move, and any water that was sitting somewhere is now ice.
Never force a frozen gate with the operator. Ice can hold a gate solid enough that the operator damages itself, the frame, or the drivetrain trying.
Most likely causes
1.Battery capacity drops in the cold
A battery that was already weak can lose enough usable capacity in freezing weather to stop working entirely.
2.Ice at the bottom of the gate
A swing gate frozen to the driveway, or ice packed in a slide gate's track.
3.Thickened grease and stiff hardware
Hinges, rollers, and gearboxes all take more force to move when cold, especially with the wrong lubricant in them.
4.Obstruction detection tripping on the extra load
The operator reads cold stiffness as an obstruction and stops.
5.Condensation and frozen moisture in electronics
Water in a keypad, photo eye, or control box freezing solid.
6.Ground movement
Freeze-thaw on clay soil moves posts and driveway slabs, changing clearances at the worst time.
Step-by-step checks

Check for ice before you press anything
Bottom rail, hinge points, track, and the ground under the gate's swing.

Clear ice gently
Warm water or a plastic scraper. No open flame, no metal chisel on the frame or track.

Release and move the gate by hand
If it won't move by hand, don't ask the operator to do it.

Test the battery
Resting voltage plus a look at the sag during motor start. Cold is the season weak batteries die.

Lubricate hardware with a cold-tolerant product
A lubricant that stays workable at low temperatures on hinges and rollers makes a real difference.

Deal with standing water
If water collects under the gate or in the track and freezes every time, drainage is the actual fix.
