Gate Opener Blows a Fuse When the Motor Starts
A fuse blows for one reason: more current flowed than it was rated for. Motor start is when current peaks, so a fuse that goes exactly then is telling you the motor circuit is drawing too much — either because the motor is working too hard, or because current is going somewhere it shouldn't.
The one thing not to do is fit a bigger fuse. The fuse is protecting the wiring and the board, and oversizing it moves the failure from a cheap part to an expensive one, or to a fire.
Most likely causes
1.The gate is jammed or binding
Locked, iced, jammed in the track, or so stiff the motor stalls. A stalled motor draws far more current than a running one.
2.Short in the motor wiring
Chafed insulation where the cable flexes, a rodent-chewed run, or a terminal touching the housing.
3.Water in the operator or a junction
Moisture bridging terminals gives a dead short the moment the circuit energises.
4.Failing motor windings
A motor going short internally draws heavily at start.
5.Failed capacitor
On AC operators, a shorted start capacitor pops fuses reliably.
6.Wrong fuse fitted
An undersized or wrong-type fuse — a fast-blow where a slow-blow is specified — will nuisance-trip on the normal start surge.
Step-by-step checks

Cut power before anything else
Disconnect line power and the backup battery, and treat the circuit as live until you've confirmed otherwise.

Check the fuse rating against the manual
Rating and type both. Somebody may have fitted whatever was in the drawer.

Try to move the gate by hand
Release the operator and move the gate through full travel. Any bind or hard stop is a prime suspect.

Look for the obvious short
Follow the motor cable end to end for chafe, cuts, and rodent damage, and check for water and insects inside the housing.

Look at the capacitor
Bulged, leaking, or scorched means replacement — and capacitors hold a charge, so don't handle one without discharging it properly.

Replace the fuse once, correctly, and watch
If it goes again immediately, stop. Repeatedly re-fusing into a fault is how boards and motors get destroyed.
When to call a gate technician
Motor testing, capacitor replacement, and tracing shorts in buried cable are technician work, and on a line-voltage operator they're genuinely hazardous. If the fuse blows twice, stop and call us.
