LiftMaster Gate Opener Clicks but Won't Open

A click with no movement means the control side of the operator is working — it received the command and energized the relay or contactor — but the motor never turned the gate. 4.Seized motor or gearbox

Bearings, gears, or a motor that has burned out. The click is the contactor doing its job into a dead motor.

5.Obstruction detection tripping instantly

If force settings are too tight for a gate that has gotten heavier to move, the operator starts and stops so fast it sounds like a single click.

    Look for the obvious lock

    Padlocks, drop rods, chains, ice at the bottom rail, a delivery driver's block. Do this before anything electrical.

    If it won't move by hand either, the problem is mechanical and no electrical repair will help. If it swings or slides freely, the fault is in the operator.

Why does my LiftMaster gate opener click without moving?

The click may come from a relay or another switching component inside the operator. It suggests something is responding to a command, but it does not confirm that the motor receives usable power.

Possible causes include:

  • Power trouble: An interrupted supply, weak battery or charging fault.
  • Mechanical resistance: Debris, damaged rollers, binding hinges or a gate dragging on the ground.

What power checks can I make safely?

Start outside the operator enclosure. Look for accessible status lights or a display, and record any code exactly. Note whether the lights dim or the display restarts when you send one normal opening command from a safe position.

  4. Use the specified manual release. Never pry the mechanism or force its key.
  5. Move the gate slowly, if safe. Stop if it requires substantial force, catches or cannot be controlled.

A sliding gate should not climb its track or catch repeatedly at one position. A swing gate should not scrape the ground or bind at its hinges.

Can safety sensors stop the gate from opening?

  • Remove leaves, mud or other objects blocking a photo-eye beam.
  • Gently clean exposed lenses.

What if I hear humming or a running motor as well as clicking?

Describe the sound separately from the click. A brief click followed by silence points to different checks than a sustained hum, grinding noise or motor that runs without moving the gate.
